NSFAS 2025 Second Semester: Everything You Need to Know

NSFAS 2025 Second Semester: Everything You Need to Know

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African government-run bursary and loan programme managed by the Department of Higher Education and Training. Established in 1996, it provides financial assistance to eligible students from low-income households studying at public universities and TVET colleges

How It Works:

NSFAS covers the costs associated with tertiary study – including tuition, accommodation, transport, living, personal care, and learning materials.

For students with a combined household income ≤ R350,000/year, funding comes as a bursary. Those earning between R350,001 and R600,000/year may be eligible for a loan. Students with disabilities also qualify with relaxed criteria (up to R600,000/year).

NSFAS funding is only for your first qualification, and continuing funding depends on academic performance and adhering to the N+ rule (the rule controlling how long funding lasts relative to program duration)

You can apply for the 2025 second-semester application cycle if:

  • You’re a South African citizen or permanent resident
  • Registered or intending to register in the second semester at a public TVET college or university
  • Your household meets the income thresholds: ≤ R350 000 (bursary) or R350 001–R600 000 (loan), with disability criteria adjusted accordingly
  • You’re not already funded for the first semester of 2025
  • You meet institutional and academic requirements like the N+ Rule

Institutions Covered:

  • All public TVET colleges and public universities accredited by DHET/SAAQ*
  • Must be registered for a first qualifying course at these institutions

For 2025 second-semester applicants, coverage includes:

  • Tuition & registration fees
  • Accommodation, capped for residences or rentals
  • Transport allowance (up to 40 km from the institution)
  • Living allowance and personal-care stipend
  • Learning materials (including books or laptops, depending on the year level)

Exact annual rates vary, but approximate allowances for university students include:

  • R5 460/year for materials, R16 500/year living, and up to R45 000/accommodation

How to Apply: Step-by-Step:

1. Create a myNSFAS account (if you haven’t already) at nsfas.org.za
2. Log in and select “Apply” for the 2025 Second Semester funding

Important After Submission:

Why This Matters:

This second-semester window is a lifeline for students who missed the first chance to apply or got accepted later for semester 2. With NSFAS funding in place, you can focus on your studies without financial stress.
