
The 2025 Nedbank External Bursary Programme
Nedbank is committed to empowering academically deserving students who demonstrate financial need, enabling them to pursue their first Undergraduate or Honours degree. Through the Nedbank External Bursary Programme, we aim to foster the development of young leaders by providing the financial support they need to achieve their academic goals.
Purpose of the Bursary Programme:
At Nedbank, we leverage our financial expertise to support young leaders in realizing their academic aspirations. The Nedbank External Bursary Programme funds students who lack the financial means to study full-time for their first Undergraduate or Honours qualification at a South African public university or university of technology. The programme targets South Africa’s critical skill shortages, emphasizing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and Green Economy skills.
Green Economy Skills:
- These skills are essential for advancing economic, environmental, and social well-being by reducing carbon emissions, increasing energy and materials efficiency, and enhancing natural capital.
To qualify for the Nedbank External Bursary Programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Citizenship: Only South African citizens are eligible.
- Financial Need: Demonstrated financial need based on household income.
- Academic Performance:
- A minimum average of 65% in the current year of application (Grade 12 or university level).
- A minimum average of 65% in subjects aligned with the intended degree.
- Mathematics Requirement: Applicants with Mathematics Literacy will not be considered.
- University Admission: Proof of admission to a South African public university or university of technology for the intended Undergraduate or Honours qualification.
Applicants must submit the following documents:
- Certified copy of the South African identity card/document.
- Most recent academic transcript:
- Grade 11 final results and mid-year results if currently in Grade 12.
- Grade 12 final results and mid-year results if currently in the first year of university.
- Last academic year results and current mid-year results if already at university.
- Financial Checks Affidavit signed by both the applicant and their parent(s) or guardian(s).
Required Documents for Shortlisted Applicants
Shortlisted applicants and their household members must provide:
- Written consent for personal information verification by third parties assisting the Nedbank Educational Trust.
- Completed income and expenditure statement for the household.
- Certified copies of:
- Identity documents.
- Recent payslips or employment letters (not older than three months).
- Proof of income, home loan statement, and city/town council rates statement (not older than three months) for informal traders or hawkers.
- IRP5, IT3, and IT12 forms for the past two years for commission-based earners.
- Pension slip or bank statement (not older than three months) for pension/grant/maintenance/rent/interest income.
- Latest three months of bank statements for parents/guardians and the applicant.
Shortlisted candidates will undergo psychometric and other assessments and participate in a virtual interview.
