
Eastern Cape Department of Education Invigilator Applications Open
The Eastern Cape Department of Education has officially opened applications for the appointment of Invigilators for the Grade 12 National Senior Certificate (NSC) and Senior Certificate (SC) examinations at part-time centres.
This opportunity is open to qualifying unemployed applicants and retired educators who meet the minimum requirements. Successful applicants will be appointed on a two-year contract, starting from the administration of the 2026 Grade 12 NSC Examination and the Senior Certificate Examination administered in June.
This was announced in Assessment Instruction 20 of 2026, issued by the Examinations and Assessment Chief Directorate of the Eastern Cape Department of Education.
About the Invigilator Opportunity:
The Department has invited applications from suitable candidates for appointment as Invigilators for the 2026, 2027 and 2028 examination cycles.
Invigilators play an important role in protecting the integrity and credibility of the examination process. Their duties include supervising candidates during examinations, securing examination materials, and ensuring that examination procedures are followed correctly.
Applications must be submitted to the District Office: Examinations and Assessment Office.
Duties of Invigilators:
According to the official instruction, appointed invigilators will be responsible for:
- Admitting registered candidates into the examination room
- Monitoring the examination process from start to finish
- Safeguarding the security of examination venues and materials
- Submitting daily reports to the district office
- Protecting the integrity and credibility of examination processes
Invigilators will also be required to attend training before the commencement of each examination, as they must have a thorough understanding of the rules, procedures and regulations relating to the administration of examinations.
Who Qualifies to Apply:
To be considered for appointment, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Must be an unemployed South African citizen or a retired educator
- Must be 25 years or older, but below 60 years
- Must have a minimum Grade 12 qualification
Foreign nationals may also apply if they have:
- A valid passport
- A work permit that is valid for more than six (6) months
- A South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluation certificate
- A Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) evaluation certificate
The following applicants will not be considered:
- Applicants who do not meet the minimum criteria
- Officials who were involved in examination irregularities
- Applicants who are employed full-time or part-time
- Individuals who are below 25 years of age or above 60 years
- Any person who was dismissed or forced to resign due to misconduct
- Any person who took a severance package in 2025/2026
Applicants should take note of the following important conditions:
- Application forms must be fully completed
- All required supporting documents, including ID and recent photographs, must be attached
- Documents must be certified by SAPS only
- Certified documents must be valid for 3 months from the date of application
- Applicants with relatives or close friends registered to write the NSC or SC examinations cannot be appointed at centres where those candidates are registered
- The Department reserves the right to disqualify any applicant who provides fraudulent, false or inaccurate information
- Successful applicants will be required to sign a binding 2-year contract with the Department of Education
Remuneration:
The Eastern Cape Department of Education confirmed that appointed invigilators will be:
- Paid per hour
- Remunerated in accordance with the Personnel Administration Measures (PAM) as amended
- Transport costs will also be paid to invigilators
Important Dates:
Applicants must make sure they submit their forms on time. The official management plan includes the following deadlines:
- Closing date for receiving application forms at District Offices: 24 April 2026
- Shortlisting at district offices: 04 – 08 May 2026
- Closing date for receiving application forms at Provincial Office: 29 May 2026
