
Netcare Education Faculty of Emergency and Critical Care Higher Certificate In Emergency Medical Care
Netcare Education’s Faculty of Emergency and Critical Care (FECC) continues to lead the way in paramedic and advanced life support education, by combining theoretical teaching and cutting-edge technology with practical training to provide world-class courses and emergency medical professional resources to serve our communities and country.
The Netcare Education Faculty of Emergency and Critical Care (FECC) offers the Diploma in Emergency Medical Care and Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care at its Durban North (KZN) and Midrand (Gauteng) campuses. Both qualifications are entry-level programmes to careers in pre-hospital emergency care and lead to registration with the HPCSA.
Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care (EMC)
- The Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care is a one-year qualification allowing graduates to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Emergency Care Assistant (ECA).
- An ECA is a core member of the Emergency Medical Services providing emergency medical care to patients in South Africa by managing both medical and trauma patients.
- The programme includes Basic Science and Emergency Medical Care modules.
Physical Preparedness – Higher Certificate in EMC
The Physical Preparedness module is compulsory. Students must register for this module every academic year.
All students must attend classes. The module is formally assessed and must be passed to graduate from the programme.
Assessment criteria:

| 200m timed swim | To be completed in under 8 minutes |
| Extended arm hang | To be completed for at least 30 seconds |
Additional Programme Information
- The programme consists of theory and practical components. The module Clinical Practice involves patient care under supervision. Students will work shifts according to a set schedule at various hospitals and Netcare 911 operational bases. Shifts will be scheduled as day and night shifts during clinical blocks and include weekend shifts.
- Students are required to wear uniform when attending classes and when working clinical shifts.
- Students are responsible for their own transport to campus, clinical shifts, swimming pool and occasional excursions.
- Currently the faculty does not have study bursaries available. Students are required to source funding for tuition fees on their own.
- It is recommended that students have access to a personal laptop and mobile phone to access online resource material.
- Diploma in EMC: To progress to the second year of studies, all first-year modules must be passed.
